Based on a survey collecting the views of election experts, this research provides independent and reliable evidence to compare whether countries meet international standards of electoral integrity. These data generate the PEI dataset and annual ‘Year in Election‘ reports.
The Electoral Management Survey is a survey of electoral authorities worldwide about how elections are run in their country. It gathers data which is not easily accessible via other methods e.g. in laws or on websites. We ask one member of a national electoral management body in each country to complete the survey on behalf of their organisation.
The Global Party Survey is an international expert survey that estimates key ideological values, issue positions, and populist rhetoric. The research project is designed to replicate the tried and tested methods of expert surveys, while simultaneously innovating and broadening the research agenda in several important ways. At the same time, however, sufficient continuity is preserved with prior research measuring party positions to facilitate comparison with these established datasets. Several robustness and validity tests increase confidence in the external validity of the new study.
The Electoral Legislation by Country dataset aims to provide a comprehensive compilation of relevant election laws for each country. This is a subset of a large data collection covering specific election laws relating to the following categories: polling stations, voting methods, technology, identification, provisional/tendered ballots, registration model, and registration methods. It compliments research from the initial data collection with legislation and other relevant information found primarily through government websites, Electoral Management Bodies, and election observation reports from governmental and non-governmental organisations. Finally, research was also supplemented with information from data repositories such as ACE Project and Constitute Project. Note that these documents primarily constitute the electoral legislation of countries but may be supplemented with other regulations not found here.
The 7th wave of the the World Values Survey, a global study of public opinion, is in the field from 2017-2019. This includes a battery of items monitoring mass evaluations of electoral integrity, developed with EIP. This replicates the same battery contained in the 6th wave of the dataset, allowing comparisons over time.
